Biography of René Burri

René Burri was a Swiss photographer renowned for his photographs of important political, historical, and cultural events, as well as iconic personalities of the second half of the 20th century. He was born in 1933 in Zurich, Switzerland. From a young age, Burri had a passion for art and attended the School of Applied Arts from 1949 to 1953. Initially, he started his career in documentary filmmaking but soon developed a fascination with photography.

Burri always had a dream to travel and see the world. He once said, "I don't belong to the typical Swiss. I always wanted to leave my native mountains. Of course, I love Switzerland, and I always enjoy coming back home, but everyone should have the opportunity to overcome their natural boundaries and explore the world. I am someone who climbed mountains and conquered the world, rediscovering it."

One of Burri's early successes was a photo reportage on deaf-mute children in the mid-1950s, which appeared in "Life" magazine and later in other publications. During this time, Burri became a member of the renowned agency Magnum Photos, where he was invited by the famous photographer Werner Bischof. Working with Magnum Photos, Burri traveled extensively, visiting countries such as Turkey, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Italy, France, Spain, Greece, Brazil, and Japan. His photographs were published in magazines such as "Look," "Stern," "Paris-Match," "Epoca," "The New York Times," and many others.

Reflecting on his work, Burri joyfully exclaimed, "They threw me into the world...and suddenly, unexpectedly, I became a photojournalist." In 1982, Burri became the president of Magnum France.

Many of Burri's photographs are considered masterpieces of the art form. Among them are the portrait of a young Che Guevara with a cigar in his mouth, as well as portraits of architect Le Corbusier and artist Pablo Picasso. Burri is also known for his series capturing the crisis in Cyprus and the conflict in the Suez Canal.

René Burri has authored several books and has had numerous exhibitions worldwide, showcasing his exceptional body of work.
