René Goblet
Early Life and EducationRené Goblet was born on November 26, 1828, in Avranches, France. After completing his legal studies, he began a career as a lawyer in Amiens.
Political Career
With the fall of the French Empire in 1870, Goblet was appointed as public prosecutor of the Amiens Court of Appeal. In 1871, he was elected to the National Assembly, where he became known as a gifted orator and a moderate republican. In 1877, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies and joined the left-wing party.
Ministerial Roles
In 1882, Goblet served as Minister of the Interior in the Freycinet government. In 1885, he was appointed Minister of Public Instruction in the Brisson government. He held the same post again in the Freycinet government in 1886 and became President of the Council of Ministers on December 17, 1886, following Freycinet's resignation.
Prime Ministership
As Prime Minister, Goblet also held the position of Minister of the Interior. His tenure was marked by a crackdown on anarchists and the implementation of important administrative reforms. On May 11, 1887, he resigned as Prime Minister.
Later Career
In 1888, Goblet was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Floquet government, a position he held until 1889. He continued to participate in politics until his death in Paris on September 13, 1905.
