Biography of Renée Jeanne Falconetti

Renée Jeanne Falconetti was a French theater and film actress, renowned for her portrayal of the titular role in the classic film "The Passion of Joan of Arc" by Carl Theodor Dreyer. She began her film career in 1917, playing a supporting role in the film "The Countess of Somerive" directed by Georges Denola and Jeanne Kém. Falconetti made her theater debut in 1918 and gained recognition when Dreyer noticed her in a amateur theatrical performance in 1926. He offered her the lead role in his famous film, which turned out to be her last in the film industry. The intense methods used by Dreyer during the filming led to a severe nervous breakdown for the actress.

In the 1930s, Falconetti participated in comedic theater productions, including performances with the Comédie-Française and as a director at the Théâtre de l'Avenue. She also appeared in plays by Sacha Guitry and Jean Giraudoux. Following the German invasion of France in 1940, Falconetti fled to Switzerland and later relocated to Argentina, where she passed away. Her remains were then transferred to the Montmartre Cemetery.
