Early Life and Influences
Richard Band, the renowned American composer, was born in Los Angeles on December 28, 1953. Hailing from a family of filmmakers, his father was the acclaimed movie producer, director, and screenwriter Albert Band. Richard is the brother of Charles Band and uncle to the young rock star Alex Band. At the tender age of five, Band and his family relocated to Sweden to follow his father, who collaborated with John Huston as a director and producer. The family spent the following year in Paris, where a young Richard immersed himself in Beethoven's symphonies.
Musical Awakening
In 1959, the family settled in Rome for the next eleven years. It was during an evening in Madrid, Spain, in 1963, that Band's passion for music ignited. Captivated by the Spanish guitar accompanying flamenco performances, he purchased his first guitar the next morning. Soon after, the teenage musician began performing in the vicinity of Rome and, a year later, was organizing his own bands and touring across Italy with four experienced players. By 17, Band had gained recognition in several cities throughout Italy and Europe.
Return to the United States
Renowned as a musician, Band returned to the United States in 1970. However, unlike many aspiring rock-and-roll stars in Los Angeles at the time, Band sought a more profound musical education. From 1972 onwards, he enrolled in music school, studying under renowned teachers John Ringgold and composer Dorrance Stalvey, stars of the "Monday Evening Concerts."
The Allure of Filmmaking
During this period, Charles Band established his first film production company, prompting Richard to take a hiatus from music and assist his brother as an assistant director on several films. Band rose from production assistant to production manager, contributing to over 15 films.
