Early Life and Education
Sergei Basilashvili was born on October 21, 1974, in Leningrad, present-day Saint Petersburg, Russia. He pursued a degree in directing and acting at Saint Petersburg State University of Film and Television (SPbGUP), under the tutelage of legendary director Zinovy Korogodsky and music pedagogue Marina Landa.
Theater Career
Upon graduating from university in 1998, Basilashvili began his career in theater at the Petersburg Theater of Generations. He worked as an actor and director, honing his skills and developing his artistic vision.
Music in Animation
Basilashvili transitioned into animation in 2001, where he began composing music for beloved cartoons. In collaboration with Marina Landa, he created soundtracks for animated series such as "Smeshariki," "Tima and Tom," and "Malyashariki." Their work also extended to animated films, including "Smeshariki. The Beginning," "Smeshariki. The Legend of the Golden Dragon," and "Teoriya Zakat."
Stage Music
Basilashvili's musical talents extended beyond animation. He composed music for stage productions at the Youth Theater on Fontanka. His works included "The Lion in Winter," "Lace of Love," and "School of Taxpayers."
Awards and Collaborations
In 2018, Basilashvili and Landa received the prestigious "Ikar" National Animation Award in the "Composer" category for their score for "Teoriya Zakat." He also collaborated with Dmitry Byurganovsky on several musical arrangements.
Other Works
Beyond his work in theater and animation, Basilashvili authored the libretto for Sergei Banevich's opera "Scenes from the Life of Nikolenka Irteniev," based on Leo Tolstoy's renowned trilogy. He also directed the documentary film "Kak Techeniye Reki," which explored Alexander Sokurov's filmmaking process for the movie "Solntse." Basilashvili also spent time working in the children's editorial department of "Radio Russia - St. Petersburg."
