Biography of Richard Sait

Richard Sait was an American economist and statistician who served as the president of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was born in Winona, Minnesota and grew up in Minneapolis. In 1943, he earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota before serving in the Navy. After his military service, Sait continued his education at Columbia University, where he earned a doctorate in economics with a specialization in statistics.

Sait began his career as a professor at City College of New York before joining Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. He taught courses in economics, statistics, and industrial management for 14 years. He then became the dean of graduate studies in industrial management before being elected as the president of the university.

As the president, Sait transformed Carnegie Mellon University into one of the top universities in the country. He started by cutting expenses, which was met with opposition and criticism. However, this was followed by the largest expansion in the university's history, with the number of faculties and programs in the top 10 rankings increasing from 3 to 12. Sait also launched several new programs in urban and public administration, engineering, architecture, art, cognitive psychology, public history, philosophy, and applied mathematics.

In addition to his administrative work, Sait was also a prolific researcher. He authored 12 books and published over 100 articles in professional journals and collections. After leaving Carnegie Mellon, he served as the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Institute of Statistical Sciences in North Carolina for four years.

Richard Sait passed away on October 7, 1998, after a long and difficult battle with cancer.
