Richard Li: From Media to Tech Tycoon

Born in Hong Kong on November 8, 1966, Richard Li is a prominent Chinese entrepreneur and businessman. He is the current Chairman and CEO of PCCW Limited and Pacific Century Group. Additionally, he serves as Chairman of Singapore-based Pacific Century Regional Developments Limited and a non-executive Director of Bank of East Asia.

Early Life and Career

Despite his father's successful business ventures, Richard Li chose to forge his own path in the media industry. He played a key role in establishing the first satellite TV platform, STAR TV, with his father's support. However, in 1995, he sold the company to News Corporation for $950 million and shifted his focus to the internet.

Transforming Telecommunications

In 2000, Richard Li acquired Cable & Wireless HKT, initially finding success. However, challenges emerged within a year. As head of PCCW Limited and Pacific Century Group in 2003, he faced setbacks due to questionable business practices, financial losses, and other issues.

Educational Controversy and Damage Control

One notable controversy involved Richard Li's claim to have graduated from Stanford University with a degree in computer science. He later admitted that this was fabricated in an interview. The public backlash tarnished his reputation as a promising internet entrepreneur.

Regaining Trust and New Ventures

Despite the setbacks, Richard Li remains hopeful about regaining public trust. He continues to explore new business opportunities while relying on the support of his father, who has consistently provided financial backing throughout his career.
