Biography of Rick Douglas Husband
Rick Douglas Husband was a United States Air Force pilot and NASA astronaut. He was born on July 12, 1957, in Amarillo, Texas, USA.
Education
Husband completed his high school education in Amarillo, Texas in 1975. He then attended Texas Tech University and earned a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1980. In 1981, he underwent military pilot training at Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma. He furthered his education at the United States Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base in California, where he graduated in 1988 with a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California.
Service in the US Air Force
From 1982 to 1985, Husband served at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia. He underwent retraining at Homestead Air Force Base in Florida in 1985. He then served at George Air Force Base in California from 1985 to 1987. Husband attended the United States Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base from 1987 to 1988. After completing his training, he became an instructor at the Test Pilot School from 1988 to 1992. As part of an exchange program, Husband served in the Royal Air Force at Boscombe Down in England from 1992 to 1994. Throughout his career, he accumulated over 3800 flight hours on more than 40 different aircraft types.
Space Activities
In December 1994, Husband was selected as an astronaut by NASA. He made his first spaceflight as the pilot of the space shuttle Discovery on the STS-96 mission, which took place from May 27 to June 6, 1999. The mission lasted for 9 days, 19 hours, 13 minutes, and 1 second.
Awards and Honors
Husband received several awards and honors throughout his career, including the Medals for "Distinguished Service," "Meritorious Service" (with oak leaf clusters), and "Service to the Air Force." In 1999, he was awarded the NASA Spaceflight Medal for his achievements in space.
