Astronaut Robert Cabana
Robert David Cabana is a former NASA astronaut who has logged a total of 37 days, 22 hours, 42 minutes, and 46 seconds in space over the course of four missions. He was born on January 23, 1949, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.
Education and Military Career
In 1967, Cabana graduated from Washburn High School in Minneapolis. He then attended the United States Naval Academy and earned a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics in 1971. After completing his academy training, Cabana underwent flight training at Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida. He subsequently served at Cherry Point Naval Air Station in North Carolina and Iwakuni in Japan. In 1975, he returned to Pensacola for further training and became a qualified naval aviator in September 1976. He was assigned to Cherry Point Naval Air Station, where he flew A-6 Intruder aircraft.
NASA Career
In June 1985, Cabana joined NASA as an astronaut candidate and completed his training in June 1986, becoming a pilot of the Space Shuttle. His first spaceflight took place from October 6 to 10, 1990, as the pilot of the Space Shuttle Discovery on the STS-41 mission. During this mission, the interplanetary probe Ulysses was launched to study the Sun.
Cabana's second spaceflight occurred from December 2 to 9, 1992, as the pilot of the Space Shuttle Discovery on the STS-53 mission. His third spaceflight took place from July 8 to 23, 1994, as the commander of the Space Shuttle Columbia on the STS-65 mission.
His fourth and final spaceflight took place from December 4 to 16, 1998, as the commander of the Space Shuttle Endeavour on the STS-88 mission. This mission involved the assembly of the International Space Station.
Personal Life and Achievements
Robert Cabana is married to Nancy Joan Shimer and they have three children: Jeffrey, Christopher, and Sarah. In addition to his career as an astronaut, Cabana is passionate about swimming and jogging.
Cabana is a member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and has been honored with several awards, including the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the NASA Exceptional Service Medal, and four NASA Space Flight Medals (in 1990, 1992, 1994, and 1998). In 1994, he was also awarded the FAI Lavochkin Medal.
