Rishi Sunak: A Political Rise in the United Kingdom
Early Life and EducationRishi Sunak was born in 1980 in Southampton, England, to Yashvir and Usha Sunak. His parents, Punjabi Hindus, had immigrated to Britain from East Africa, where their parents had settled from India during colonial times. Sunak's grandparents initially lived in Punjab before moving to Africa and then to the United Kingdom in the 1970s.
Sunak attended Oxford University, where he studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. After graduating, he worked at Goldman Sachs from 2001 to 2004. He then pursued an MBA at Stanford University, returning to the City and working for the hedge fund TCI. Later, he co-founded a $1 billion global investment firm specializing in supporting small businesses in the UK.
Political Career
In 2015, Sunak won the parliamentary election in Richmond (Yorks) with a significant majority. He was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government in 2018. In 2019, he became Chief Secretary to the Treasury under Boris Johnson's government.
Chancellor of the Exchequer
In February 2020, Sunak was promoted to Chancellor of the Exchequer. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he implemented financial support measures for businesses and postponed the budget announcement. He was a supporter of Brexit but clashed with Johnson over the need for a deal with the EU. In July 2022, Sunak resigned from his post, citing "irreconcilable differences on economic policy."
Conservative Party Leadership Contests
Following Johnson's resignation, Sunak entered the Conservative Party leadership race in July 2022. He emerged as the frontrunner, receiving the most support from Conservative MPs in the initial rounds of voting. However, he ultimately lost to Liz Truss in the final member vote.
Truss's resignation in October 2022 triggered a new leadership contest. Sunak was again considered the favorite and was elected unopposed on October 24, 2022.
Personal Life
Sunak is married to Akshata Murthy, the daughter of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy. In 2022, he became the first frontline politician to be included in the "Sunday Times" Rich List, with a combined wealth of £730 million.
