Early Life and EducationRob Brydon, born Robert Brydon Jones, hails from Baglan, Port Talbot, Wales. Growing up, he developed an interest in acting and joined a local theater group. He later pursued higher education at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff, but left after two years to embark on a career in radio.
Radio and Early Career
Brydon's career began at 'Radio Wales,' where he worked as a DJ and hosted a Saturday morning show with fellow Welsh comedian Pete Park-Walker. He spent six years at the station, eventually hosting a major music program.
Acting Breakthrough
Brydon's acting breakthrough came through voice acting. He provided voices for characters in classic video game adaptations of Terry Pratchett's 'Discworld' novels, as well as advertisements for companies such as 'Renault,' 'Tango,' and 'Tesco.' He also voiced the main character, Detective Lewton, in the video game 'Discworld Noir.'
In the early 1990s, Brydon began seeking small roles in films and television series. His efforts paid off in 2000 when he landed parts in the Julia Davis-scripted series 'Human Remains' and the commercially successful comedy 'Marion and Geoff.' These roles gained him recognition and led to more substantial opportunities.
Notable Roles
In 2005, Brydon portrayed theater critic Kenneth Tynan in the film 'Kenneth Tynan: In Praise of Hardcore.' He returned to his Welsh roots in the role of Bryn West in the BAFTA-winning 'Gavin and Stacey,' written by Ruth Jones and James Corden. Brydon reprised this role for the 2009 'Comic Relief' single 'Island in the Stream' with Jones and singer Tom Jones, which reached number one on the UK Singles Chart.
Television and Game Shows
Brydon's television career extends beyond acting. Since 2006, he has hosted a variety of game shows. In 2009, he embarked on his first stand-up comedy tour, marking a departure from his previous stage work under different pseudonyms.
Personal Life
Brydon married Claire Holland, a former producer for the 'South Bank Show,' in 2006 at Windsor Church. They reside in Strawberry Hill, London, with their son (born 2008). Brydon also has two daughters (born 1994 and 1999) and a son (born 1996) from his first marriage.
