Early Life and Education
Yuri Romanenko was born on October 2, 1939, in Moscow, USSR. His childhood coincided with the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). After the war, he attended school in Moscow and entered the Stavropol Suvorov Military School in 1953. In 1957, he became a cadet at the Kharkiv Higher Aviation Engineering Military School, graduating in 1962.
Military Career
Romanenko served in aviation units for several years after completing his education. In 1965, he was selected as a Soviet cosmonaut (Group No. 3 of the Air Force). He underwent extensive training for space missions on Soyuz spacecraft and Salyut orbital stations. During this time, he also became a qualified pilot.
Cosmonaut Career
In 1976, Romanenko served as a member of the support crew for the Soyuz-21 mission. In October 1976, he was part of the backup crew for Soyuz-23. From February 7-25, 1977, he flew as a flight engineer aboard Soyuz-24 and the Salyut-5 space station with Viktor Gorbatko. The mission lasted 17 days, 17 hours, 25 minutes, and 58 seconds.
Post-Flight Activities
Following his spaceflight, Romanenko continued working at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, where he held positions as Deputy Chief and First Deputy Chief. He also pursued academic pursuits, earning a PhD in 1974.
Honors and Awards
Romanenko is a decorated hero, receiving the title of Hero of the Soviet Union and numerous medals, including the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Star. He has been awarded the Konstantin Tsiolkovsky Gold Medal of the USSR Academy of Sciences and the Vladimir Komarov Honorary Diploma. He is also a laureate of the USSR State Prize.
Author and Citizen
Romanenko has authored several books, including "On Orbit Outside the Spaceship" and "Black Silence." He is an honorary citizen of various cities, including Kaluga, Gagarino (Russia), Kustanai, Dzhezkazgan (Kazakhstan), and Poznan (Poland).
