Biography of Robert Greifeld
Robert Greifeld was born on July 16, 1957, in New York. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in English Language from Iona College in 1979. He also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from New York University, which he earned in 1986. Greifeld is married and has two sons and a daughter.
Head of Nasdaq
Since May 2003, Greifeld has served as the Chief Executive Officer and President of Nasdaq, the American stock exchange. Prior to this role, he held the position of Executive Vice President at SunGard Data Systems. From 1991 to 1999, Greifeld served as the Chief Operating Officer at Automated Securities Clearance.
Attempted Acquisition of London Stock Exchange
In 2006, Greifeld made two attempts to acquire the London Stock Exchange (LSE). The first offer, valued at $4.1 billion, was deemed insufficient by LSE's executives Clara Furse and Chris Gibson-Smith, despite exceeding the market capitalization of LSE by 8%. However, Nasdaq did not back down from its intentions. In May, Nasdaq increased its stake in LSE to 24.1%. On November 20, Nasdaq made a new unfriendly offer to acquire LSE for $5.1 billion (alternatively reported as $5.5 billion). Once again, LSE's management rejected the proposal, claiming that the Americans had significantly undervalued the British stock exchange. Subsequently, representatives from Nasdaq expressed their intention to directly address their offer to LSE shareholders, bypassing its leadership.
