Early Career and Professional Debut
Keith Thurman, an American professional boxer, began his career in the welterweight division in 2001. In 2004, he earned the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) title at lightweight, defeating Cesar Figuerora in the fourth round. However, he faced his first professional defeat in 2005, losing a split decision to Gamaliel Diaz.
Welterweight Dominance
On June 23, 2006, Thurman avenged his loss to Diaz, knocking him out in the sixth round. In September 2006, he captured the IBF welterweight title by defeating Eric Aiken in the eighth round. After retaining his title against Orlando Salido in a later fight, which was subsequently ruled a no-contest due to Salido testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs, Thurman moved up to the light welterweight division.
Light Welterweight Success
In August 2009, Thurman defeated Malcolm Klassen to become the new IBF light welterweight champion. He defended his title against Joel Casamayor in 2010.
Lightweight and Welterweight Titles
On April 9, 2011, Thurman won the interim WBA and WBO lightweight titles by defeating Australian Michael Katsidis. Returning to the welterweight division, he captured the interim WBC welterweight title by beating Aydin Selcuk in 2012. Thurman successfully defended his title against Andre Berto later that year.
Legendary Losses
On May 4, 2013, Thurman faced legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., suffering a unanimous decision loss. He faced another setback in 2016, losing to Danny Garcia by unanimous decision in a bid for the vacant WBC welterweight title.
Legal Challenges
In 2013, Thurman was arrested at New York's JFK Airport for attempting to board a plane with a .45-caliber firearm.
