Biography of Robert Guy Torricelli
Robert Guy Torricelli, an American politician from the state of New Jersey, represents the Democratic Party. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 14 years before being elected to the U.S. Senate. However, he decided not to seek re-election after a scandal involving the financing of his campaign, which was linked to Korean businessman David Chang, who was imprisoned.
Early Life and Education
Robert Torricelli was born on August 27, 1951, in Paterson, New Jersey. He has Italian-American roots from his father's side, but was raised in the Methodist faith. After graduating from the Storm King School, a private boarding school in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, Torricelli became a student at Rutgers University. He earned a bachelor's degree in 1974 and later graduated from Rutgers Law School in 1977. The following year, he passed the New York state bar exam and went on to attend Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, where he obtained a master's degree in public administration in 1980.
Political Career
Torricelli served as an aide to New Jersey Governor Brendan Byrne from 1975 to 1977. In 1978, at the age of 28, he was part of Vice President Walter Mondale's campaign staff and managed the Carter-Mondale campaign for the Illinois primary election. In 1980, he was a member of the Committee on Rules and Procedures at the Democratic National Convention, as part of the Carter-Mondale campaign.
In 1982, Torricelli used his political connections to run for the U.S. Congress, defeating Republican incumbent Harold Hollenbeck with 53% of the votes. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1983 to 1996, representing New Jersey's 9th congressional district. He then spent an additional seven years, from 1997 to 2003, as a U.S. Senator. Torricelli won the Senate election in 1996, defeating Republican Dick Zimmer to fill the seat vacated by Democratic Senator Bill Bradley.
In 2000, Torricelli chaired the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and played a key role in helping Democrats gain four seats in the Senate. Currently, Torricelli works as a lobbyist and partner at Panepinto Properties, a real estate development firm based in Jersey City.
Controversies
In 2007, Torricelli faced controversy again when it was revealed that he had spent a portion of the remaining $2.9 million from his Senate campaign on political contributions to candidates who supported his business interests. Despite these controversies, Torricelli has remained involved in political and business endeavors.
