A Footballer's Fall from Grace: The Cocaine Gang of Hyde

Robert Hartshorne, a former striker for the non-league club Glossop North End, led a gang that trafficked cocaine and other drugs across the North West of England. Despite playing for a team outside the Premier League, he lived a lavish lifestyle worthy of a football star.

Properties and Assets Galore

Based in Hyde, Greater Manchester, the 28-year-old owned six properties worth over £600,000. Police raids on Hartshorne's homes revealed a wardrobe filled with designer clothes, over £30,000 worth of jewelry, and vacation photos from exotic resorts.

Arrests and Convictions

Hartshorne and his associates were convicted of cocaine dealing. Hartshorne was sentenced to 11 years in prison. The gang also included Alan Page, Michael Gaskell, Sean Cannon, Michael Tingey, Douglas Merron, and Stephanie Merron. Page, 35, received a sentence of over 54 years after police seized drugs worth £900,000 and £110,000 in cash from him.

The Investigation

The investigation began in 2010 when police in Stockport stopped a car containing a bag filled with cocaine. Gaskell's fingerprints were found on the bag, leading police to Hartshorne as the mastermind behind the operation. Raids on the gang's homes and cars uncovered substantial amounts of cash and cocaine, worth up to £345,000.

Police Response

Detective Chief Inspector Rick Williams stated, "This case is a perfect illustration that police will go to great lengths to bring to justice those criminals who think they are above the law."

Chief Constable Neil Evans of Greater Manchester Police added, "Drugs are a major driver of crimes such as robbery, burglary, and vehicle theft, so by tackling drug dealing, we are making our streets safer. This case demonstrates that crime does not pay. We will continue to disrupt illegal drug operations across the county and bring to justice all those involved. We will also strip the criminals of the cash and assets they have gained through their criminality."
