Biographic Sketch of Robert Kretschmer
Early Life and EducationRobert Kretschmer, a renowned German artist and illustrator, commenced his artistic journey at the esteemed Berlin Academy of Arts. In the vibrant city of Leipzig, he assumed the role of Art Director for a local newspaper in early 1849. Later, in 1857, he honed his lithographic skills at I.G. Bach's institute in Leipzig.
Exploration of Nature and Art
Kretschmer's artistic pursuits were increasingly drawn towards the study of flora and fauna. In 1862, he accompanied Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha on an expedition to Egypt, providing richly detailed illustrations for the Duke's subsequent travelogue published in Leipzig in 1861. His artistic prowess also extended to scientific texts, such as Settegast's "Animal Husbandry," and reputable journals.
Masterpiece: Illustrations for "Animal Life"
Kretschmer's most significant contribution to natural history illustration came through his collaborations with Alfred Brehm's "Animal Life."
