Returning to civilian life in Scottsdale, Arizona, Schimmel's comedy career ignited when his sister convinced him to perform at an open-mic event. Despite a setback when his prospective Los Angeles venue was destroyed by fire, Schimmel persevered, garnering support from Rodney Dangerfield, who featured him in his "Young Comedians Special."
Professional Ascent and Challenges
Schimmel's unique style and relatable humor earned him recognition as a writer for the sketch comedy show "In Living Color" and for performers like Yakov Smirnoff and Jimmie Walker. His personal struggles, including the tragic death of his 11-year-old son Derek from leukemia, became the poignant heart of his comedy.

In 2010, Schimmel revealed he had contracted hepatitis C during a blood transfusion in Vietnam, which had progressed into cirrhosis. He was placed on a liver transplant waiting list but succumbed to injuries sustained in a car accident on August 26, 2010.
