Biography of Robert Sterling Arnold

Robert Sterling Arnold was an American singer, composer, school vocal teacher, and publisher. He was posthumously inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2005, and the Texas Gospel Music Hall of Fame over 20 years before that.

Early Life

Robert was born in Coleman, Coleman County, Texas to Millard Franklin and Rowena Victoria Arnold. He learned the secrets of music under the guidance of several outstanding teachers, including Mr. & Mrs. J. H. Carr, W. W. Combs, L. A. Gordon, J. B. Herbert, John A. McClung, Will M. Ramsey, and Frank White.

Musical Journey

For some time, Robert traveled across the country with various music groups, such as the Central Music Company Quartet. During his travels, Arnold worked in almost 300 different music schools.

Personal Life

In 1928, Robert married Cora Angie McDonald, whom he met in Veribest, near San Angelo, Texas. The couple lived in Fort Worth, Kennedale, and Jefferson, Texas, before returning to Coleman in 1975. In Fort Worth, Arnold worked in his own studio and taught vocal and piano lessons.

National Music Company

Arnold founded the National Music Company, which has published nearly 50 musical works to date. Before starting his own company, Robert worked in the Hartford National Company alongside Albert E. Brumley and W. Oliver Cooper.

Notable Songs

Among Arnold's most famous songs are 'Did You Repent, Fully Repent?', 'Have You Thought, Really Thought?', 'If I Could But Just Take One Soul To Heaven', and 'I Wanta Get Right'. His biggest hit was the song 'No Tears in Heaven', written in 1935, which is still frequently performed by gospel artists. This song has been covered by Buck Owens, Skeeter Davis, and Red Foley.

Legacy

Robert Sterling Arnold was posthumously inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Texas Gospel Music Hall of Fame over 20 years before that. He passed away on February 8, 2003, in Coleman County at the age of 98.
