Robert Vittek is a Slovakian footballer who made a name for himself as a prolific striker for both his club and country. Born in Bratislava, Slovakia, Vittek began his career with hometown club Slovan Bratislava in 1999.
Early Career in Slovakia
During his time at Slovan Bratislava, Vittek helped the team secure three runner-up finishes in the Slovak Super Liga. However, despite his impressive goal-scoring exploits, he failed to lift any major trophies with the club.
Breakthrough in Germany
In 2003, Vittek made the move to Germany's 2. Bundesliga side FC Nürnberg. In his first season with the club, he played a pivotal role in their promotion to the Bundesliga. The following season, Vittek's performances earned him a place in the Slovakian national team.
Success and Trophy Lift with Nürnberg
Vittek's breakthrough moment came in the 2006-07 season when he helped Nürnberg clinch the DFB-Pokal (German Cup). This marked the first major trophy of Vittek's career. However, the following year, Nürnberg was relegated from the Bundesliga, and Vittek eventually decided to leave the club.
Stint in France and Turkey
In 2008, Vittek joined French club Lille. After a season and a half in France, he moved on loan to Turkish side Ankaragücü. His impressive performances during his loan spell convinced Ankaragücü to sign him permanently for a fee of €2.1 million.
International Glory with Slovakia
Vittek earned 78 caps for the Slovakian national team, scoring 23 goals. He rose to prominence at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, where he scored a brace against defending champions Italy. This victory secured Slovakia's passage to the knockout stage of the tournament.
Legacy and Retirement
Vittek retired from professional football in 2018. He is considered one of the greatest Slovakian footballers of all time, renowned for his finishing ability, aerial prowess, and ability to score important goals in crucial matches.
