Early Life and Education

Rod Paige was born on June 17, 1933, in Brookhaven, Mississippi. His father was a school principal, while his mother was a librarian. Paige received his early education in Mississippi and went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Jackson State University. In 1969, he obtained a doctorate from Indiana State University.

Academic Career

Paige dedicated much of his career to teaching at higher education institutions. He developed several programs focused on improving teaching methodologies and fostering partnerships between schools and businesses to enhance student achievement and boost teacher salaries. In 2000, he received the prestigious Harold McGraw Prize for his unwavering commitment to education reform.

Leadership in Houston ISD

Paige became the first African American Superintendent of Houston Independent School District, overseeing the education of 210,000 students. Observers credited his leadership with raising educational standards in Texas.

United States Secretary of Education

In 2001, Paige achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first African American to serve as United States Secretary of Education. During his tenure, he focused on initiatives to improve teacher quality, promote choice and accountability in education, and reduce the achievement gap between minority and majority students.

Personal Life and Connections

Paige is divorced and has a son. He shares a long-standing friendship with the Bush family. In the 1980s, he collaborated with George H.W. Bush, the father of former President George W. Bush.
