Biography of Roddy McDowall
Roddy McDowall, born Roderick Andrew Anthony Jude McDowall, was an American actor who was born on 17th September 1928 in Herne Hill, London, England. His parents, Thomas Andrew McDowall and Winsfriede McDowall, were both passionate about theatre, which influenced Roddy's career choice.
Early Career
As a child, McDowall appeared in several films and gained popularity with his role in the 1941 film "How Green Was My Valley." This success led to numerous offers, and he went on to star in films such as "Lassie Come Home," "My Friend Flicka," "Keys of the Kingdom," and "White Cliffs of Dover."
Planet of the Apes
In 1968, McDowall landed the role of Cornelius in the film "Planet of the Apes," directed by Franklin J. Schaffner. His portrayal of the character was so convincing that he was invited to join the television series based on the film in 1974. McDowall also made appearances on other television shows as the same character.
Later Career and Personal Life
McDowall continued to act in films until 1998. He also worked at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, where he was elected as the president in 1998. McDowall had a passion for photography and released five albums featuring his work. While he never publicly discussed his sexual orientation, it was known that he was gay and had relationships with several Hollywood actors, including Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift.
Death and Legacy
On October 3, 1998, McDowall passed away at his home in Los Angeles, California, due to lung cancer. In his final months, he was cared for by his friend Dennis Osborne. McDowall's close friend, Angela Lansbury, delivered a farewell speech on a live broadcast of BBC Radio 5 Live the following day, honoring his memory.
