Roger Bonvin was a Swiss politician and president who made significant contributions to Switzerland's infrastructure and governance.

Early Career and Education

Born in 1907, Bonvin graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich in 1932 as a civil engineer. He subsequently participated in the construction of the Grande Dixence Dam (1932-34), worked at the National Topographical Bureau (1935-36), and in the Department of Public Works of the Canton of Valais (1936-42).

Political Career in Valais

In 1942, Bonvin joined the Department of Internal Affairs, where he focused on labor protection. From 1949 to 1955, he oversaw the construction of the Mauvoisin Dam. In 1955, he was elected Mayor of Sion and entered the National Council, serving until 1962.

Federal Councillor and Swiss President

In 1962, Bonvin was elected to the Federal Council, Switzerland's governing body. He served as Head of the Department of Finance from 1962 to 1968 and Head of the Department of Transport, Communications, and Energy from 1968 to 1973. In 1966 and 1972, he served as Vice President of Switzerland. In 1967 and 1973, he held the office of President of Switzerland.

Role in Infrastructure Development

Bonvin played a pivotal role in the construction of the Furka Base Tunnel, which was inaugurated just 20 days after his passing in 1974. His contributions to Switzerland's infrastructure and political landscape continue to be remembered and honored.
