Born into a Jewish family, Roger Myerson received his higher education at Harvard University. After earning a bachelor's degree with honors, he went on to obtain a master's degree in applied mathematics. In 1976, Myerson completed his doctoral studies, specializing in applied mathematics, with a dissertation on the theory of collective games.

From 1976 to 2001, Myerson worked as a professor of economics at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. It was during this period that he conducted a majority of the research that formed the basis of his Nobel-winning work. He also served as a visiting professor at Bielefeld University in 1978-1979 and at the University of Chicago in 1985-1986 and 2000-2001. In 2001, Myerson permanently relocated to the University of Chicago, where he currently holds an honorary professorship in economics.

Myerson's unique contribution to the theory of optimal mechanisms lies in his discovery of the fundamental connection between resource allocation and the monetary amounts that informed agents must receive in order for the information they provide to be guaranteed truthful. The theory of optimal mechanisms enables economists to differentiate between situations in which market systems will function well and those in which market mechanisms are absent. As a result, this theory greatly assists economists in determining effective trading methods, management schemes, and voting procedures. It plays a crucial role in several important areas of economics and political science.

In 1980, Roger Myerson married Gina Weber, and they have two children together, a son named Daniel and a daughter named Rebecca. In 1991, Myerson published a textbook on game theory, and he has also authored a historical work on the origins and development of this field.
