Roger Wicker: From the Air Force to the Senate
Early Life and EducationRoger Wicker was born and raised in Mississippi. He graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1973 and earned a law degree in 1975.
Military Service
After completing law school, Wicker served in the United States Air Force from 1976 to 1980. He remained in the Air Force Reserves until 2003.
Political Career
Wicker began his political career in 1994 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. In 2007, when Senator Trent Lott resigned, Governor Haley Barbour appointed Wicker to the Senate.
Letter Containing Ricin
In 2013, Wicker received an anonymous letter containing white powder. The powder was later identified as ricin, a highly toxic substance. Similar letters had been sent to other U.S. senators in the past.
Widespread Use of Ricin
In recent years, letters containing ricin or other deadly substances have been received by politicians, government officials, and media outlets around the world. In 2008, there was a surge in reports of dangerous mail. Most of these letters turned out to be hoaxes.
