Roh Moo-hyun: A Life of Public Service and Tragedy

Early Life and Education

Roh Moo-hyun was born on September 1, 1946, in the small village of Gimhae, South Gyeongsang Province, to a poor farming family. Despite his humble beginnings, he excelled in his studies and was a diligent student. Upon graduating from high school, he received a scholarship to attend Busan Commercial High School, graduating in 1966.

Legal Career and Political Activism

Following his military service, Roh obtained a law degree and embarked on a career as a judge and later a human rights lawyer. In the 1980s, he began his political activism, becoming a National Assembly member in 1988. He gained popularity for his investigations into government corruption as a member of the parliamentary inquiry committee.

Presidency and Impeachment

Roh Moo-hyun was elected President of South Korea in 2003. However, his presidency was marred by allegations of corruption. In 2008, he was impeached by the National Assembly but was later reinstated by the Constitutional Court.

Suicide and Legacy

Roh Moo-hyun's life ended tragically on May 23, 2009, when he committed suicide by jumping off a cliff. He left behind a suicide note, which was quoted in part by the South Korean media: "I am going through a very hard time. I have given too much trouble to many people."

His death shocked the nation and raised questions about the pressures faced by the former president. Roh Moo-hyun's legacy remains complex, with his supporters praising his commitment to social justice and human rights, while his detractors criticize his handling of the economy and allegations of corruption.
