Early Life and Political Beginnings
Roman Malinowski was born on February 26, 1935, in Białystok, Poland, to a working-class family. He entered the political arena in 1956, joining the United Peasants' Party (ZSL), which was part of the ruling communist coalition.
Rise Within the ZSL
Malinowski quickly ascended the ranks within the ZSL, holding various positions in its Central Committee, Agricultural Cooperatives Union, and National Council. In 1975, he became Chairman of the Łódź Voivodship National Council and, subsequently, Łódź Voivode.
Government and Party Leadership
In 1976, Malinowski was elected to the Sejm (parliament). He served as Minister of Food and Agricultural Procurement from 1980 to 1981. In November 1981, he became Chairman of the ZSL's Central Committee, a position he held until September 1989.
Concurrently, from 1981 to 1986, Malinowski served as Chairman of the Council for Food Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister of Poland. He was also a member of the Presidium of the Executive Committee of the All-Polish National Revival Movement from 1982 to 1983.
Marshal of the Sejm and Beyond
In 1985, Malinowski became Marshal of the Sejm of the Polish People's Republic. From 1987, he chaired the All-Polish Council of the Polish-Soviet Friendship Society.
Despite being considered as a potential Prime Minister in 1989, Malinowski's candidature was ultimately rejected. He resigned from the ZSL in September 1989.
