Early Life and Naval Career

Birth and Ancestry:

Vasily Yakovlevich Khanikov was born on December 27, 1795, in the village of Rozhdestveno in the Kaluga Governorate. He came from an aristocratic Russian family of Tatar origin.

Education and Military Service:

Khanikov entered the Naval Cadet Corps in 1804 and became a midshipman in 1806. He served in the campaign against Sweden in 1808 and participated in the capture of Lübeck in 1812. In 1813, he took part in the Battle of Wechelmuende.

Civil Service Career

Early Appointments:

In 1819, Khanikov resigned from the navy and pursued a career in civil service. He received the rank of collegiate assessor and was appointed as the assistant to the head of a department in the Imperial Chancellery.

Promotions and Responsibilities:

Khanikov rose through the ranks, becoming a court chamberlain in 1832 and state secretary in 1841. He frequently filled in for Nikolai Bakhtin, the director of the Committee of Ministers. In 1843, he was appointed director of the Committee of Ministers. In 1850, he became a member of the State Council.

Honors and Awards

Throughout his career, Khanikov received numerous awards for his service, including the Orders of Saint Vladimir, Saint Anna, Saint Stanislav, the White Eagle, and Saint Alexander Nevsky.

Personal Life

Khanikov married his cousin, Ekaterina Nikolaevna Khanikova, in 1815. They had four children: Yakov, Nikolai, Vasili, and Kleopatra. His nephews, Nikolai and Yakov Khanikov, became renowned geographers and Orientalists.

Death and Legacy

Khanikov passed away on March 15, 1850, in St. Petersburg. He was buried in the Dobry Pokrovsky Monastery in the Kaluga Governorate.
