Early Life and Education
Rosemary Ann Harris was born in Ashby, Suffolk, England, in 1927. Her father was a Royal Air Force officer, and her childhood was spent in India. After graduating from a convent boarding school for girls, Harris enrolled in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1951, having already decided to pursue a career in acting.
Early Career: Stage and Screen
Before her formal training, Harris made her stage debut in 1947 in a production of "Kiss and Tell" in Eastbourne. In the early 1950s, she alternated between performances on the English and American stages. She made her Broadway debut in 1951 in "Climate of Eden." In 1954, Harris made her film debut in the biographical drama "Beau Brummell" opposite Elizabeth Taylor.
Return to Broadway and First Marriage
Following her film debut, Harris returned to Broadway, appearing in "Troilus and Cressida." During this time, she met her first husband, theater producer Ellis Rabb. They married in 1959 and divorced in 1967. By then, Harris had already established herself in film and television, with roles in "The Shiralee," "Uncle Vanya," and "Twelfth Night." She also continued to perform on stage, notably as Ophelia in Peter O'Toole's "Hamlet" in 1964.
Second Marriage and Family
After her divorce, Harris married American writer John Ehle in 1967. Ehle later followed in his wife's footsteps, acting in several stage plays and writing film scripts. Their daughter, Jennifer Ehle, also became an actress.
Later Career: Television and Film
Harris's career continued to flourish, with notable roles in the television series "Holocaust" (1978) and the film "Radio Free Albemuth" (2009). Her versatility and longevity on stage, screen, and television have earned her numerous awards and nominations, including Tonys, Emmys, Golden Globes, and Drama Desk awards.
