Rosir Calderon: From Cuban Star to International Icon
Early Life and Family LegacyRosir Calderon was born into a family of celebrated volleyball players in Cuba. Her mother, Erenia Diaz Sanchez, was a member of the national team that won the World Championship in 1978. Her father, Luis Felipe Calderon, guided the Cuban women's team to Olympic victory in Sydney 2000.
Early Career and International Success
Calderon made her national team debut in 2002 and competed in the World Championship in Germany. She earned a bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics. In 2005, she joined the Russian club Dynamo Moscow alongside fellow Cuban Soyla Barros. Dynamo won bronze in the Russian Super League that season, with Calderon's father assisting as a coach.
Return to Cuba and Individual Accolades
After one season in Russia, Calderon returned to Cuba and continued her career with Ciudad-Havana. In 2006, she was named Best Spiker at the World Championship, and in 2008, she received the same honor at the Beijing Olympics, where Cuba finished fourth.
Pregnancy Break and Return to Europe
Following the Beijing Games, Calderon took a break from volleyball due to pregnancy. She relocated to Moscow and gave birth to a son, Luis Felipe, in honor of her late father.
Continued Success in Switzerland and Turkey
In 2011, Calderon resumed her career with Swiss club Vólero Zürich. Later that year, she moved to Turkish side Galatasaray. In 2013, she joined Dinamo Krasnodar in Russia, where she won the Russian Cup and the CEV Cup in 2014.
Acquisition of Russian Citizenship and Continued Travels
Calderon became a Russian citizen in 2014. She returned to Turkey in 2015 to play for Eczacıbaşı Istanbul. In the following years, she briefly played in Japan, France, and Switzerland again.
