Early Life and Education
Rostislav Sergeyevich Demidov was born on November 4, 1922, in Kharkiv, Ukraine, to Sergey Vasilievich and Maria Avraamovna Demidova. Despite his early interest in ships and aircraft, he initially pursued a conventional path and graduated high school with honors.
Military Career
Joining the NavyIn 1940, Demidov's passion for aviation led him to enroll in the S.A. Levanevsky Naval Aviation School. He graduated in an accelerated program in 1941 and was assigned as a navigator to the 4th Mine-Torpedo Regiment of the Pacific Fleet.
Service on the Baltic Fleet
In 1943, Demidov and his pilot, Aleksandr Gagiev, were transferred to the prestigious 1st Guard Mine-Torpedo Regiment on the Baltic Fleet. There, they flew American "Boston" bombers, which were versatile aircraft used for bombing, torpedo attacks, and mine-laying.
Combat Missions and Heroism
Demidov meticulously planned each mission, utilizing his exceptional navigational skills to deliver deadly payloads against enemy targets. He mastered the innovative tactic of topmast bombing, which involved flying dangerously close to ships to drop bombs directly onto their masts. In one memorable episode, their squadron successfully disrupted a German landing attempt on the coast of the Koporsky Gulf.
Distinguished Service
By the end of World War II, Demidov and Gagiev had flown 106 combat missions, sinking six enemy vessels totaling 27,500 tons. For their bravery, both were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. Demidov also received the Order of Lenin and three Orders of the Red Banner.
Post-War Career
Academic AccomplishmentsAfter the war, Demidov continued his military education, graduating from the Air Force Academy in 1951. Subsequently, he became a professor at the Naval Academy in Leningrad, where he served for 20 years. He also authored several textbooks on military science and became a Doctor of Naval Sciences.
Other Pursuits
In addition to his military career, Demidov enjoyed sports such as volleyball, skiing, and swimming. He was an avid reader of Russian classics, military memoirs, and theater enthusiast, having attended numerous performances in Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
Retirement and Legacy
Colonel Rostislav Sergeyevich Demidov retired in 1983. He continued to work as a professor at the Moscow Institute of Civil Aviation Engineers for nearly a decade.
