John "Rove" McManus: A Life in Comedy

John Henry Michael "Rove" McManus is an Australian comedian, television host, and producer. Known for his comedic talk show, "Rove LA," he has also hosted the five-time Logie Award-winning comedy show "Rove." McManus is the owner of the production company Roving Enterprises.

Early Life and Career

Born in Perth, Western Australia, in 1974, McManus' nickname "Rove" was given to him by his sister. He attended Orana Catholic Primary School and Corpus Christi College. In 1997, he began hosting "The Loft Live," a program on student television station RMITV with a budget of $50 per week. It was there that he met Peter Helliar, his future co-host.

The "Rove" Show

In 1999, Nine Network commissioned McManus to produce nine episodes of a show called "Rove." After a hiatus, the show was revived in 2000 on Network Ten and became a staple of the network, also airing on TV3 in New Zealand. The show featured live music, celebrity guests, and comedy acts from around the world. McManus became known for his signature question, "Who would you turn gay for?"

Roving Enterprises

In 2000, McManus established Roving Enterprises, a production company. He became a producer of Network Ten's talk show "Rove Live." Roving Enterprises also produced the ARIA Music Awards from 2002 to 2004, hosted by McManus himself.

"Good Morning Australia" and "Ten Seriously 40"

In early 2004, when Bert Newton fell ill, McManus was one of several guest hosts for "Good Morning Australia." He hosted episodes on April 24 and October 12, 2004. The following year, Newton and McManus co-hosted "Ten Seriously 40," a special program celebrating the history of the Ten Network.

Hiatus and Return

After the death of his wife Belinda from cancer in November 2006, McManus took an indefinite hiatus, sparking rumors that he was leaving television permanently. However, he returned on April 1, 2007, and managed to gather an audience of 1.69 million viewers for his "Rove" show.

"Rove LA"

In May 2011, it was confirmed that McManus' program would be revived as "Rove LA," which debuted on FOX8 on September 19. The second season of "Rove LA" premiered in 2012.

Personal Life and Other Ventures

McManus is a supporter of the Fremantle Football Club in the Australian Football League. His cousin, Shaun McManus, played for the team. In 2002, he was made the club's first honorary Life Member, a prestigious but largely symbolic position.

McManus has appeared in a cameo role as a crab in the 2003 animated film "Finding Nemo." He has also voiced himself in the animated series "bro'Town" and various characters in the series "Robot Chicken."

He is currently working on a film titled "Cookies From Outer Space" with actor and director Yahoo Serious.
