Roy Jenkins: A Statesman and Scholar
Military Service and Political BeginningsRoy Jenkins, a prominent British statesman, served in the artillery and as a codebreaker at Bletchley Park, the UK's wartime codebreaking center, during World War II. He ended his military service as a captain. In 1948, he was elected to the House of Commons as a Labour MP.
Cabinet Minister and European Leader
Jenkins made a name for himself as a Labour MP and cabinet minister in the 1960s and 1970s. Notably, he became the first and possibly the only President of the European Commission from the UK. In 1981, he co-founded the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Honors and Academic Pursuits
In 1987, Jenkins was appointed Chancellor of the University of Oxford, a position he held until his passing. He was also a prolific writer, particularly in the field of biography. Jenkins's biography of William Gladstone won the Whitbread Book of the Year in the biography category in 1995. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA) in 1993.
