Early Life and EmigrationRudi Gernreich was born in Vienna on August 8, 1922. In 1938, he and his mother emigrated to the United States to escape Nazi persecution.
Design Education and Early Career
Gernreich settled in Los Angeles, California, where he completed his education at City College and the School of Fine Arts. He initially worked in Hollywood as a sketch artist for renowned costume designer Edith Head, before transitioning to ready-to-wear companies.

In 1952, Gernreich established his own design studio, focusing on sportswear and swimwear. In 1958, he launched his first women's clothing collection.
