Early Life and Military Career

Werner - a German officer and decorated hero - enlisted as a cadet in a grenadier regiment in 1909. Promoted to lieutenant in 1910, he served valiantly in World War I as a machine gun platoon commander and later as a machine gun company commander. By the war's end, he had earned Iron Crosses of both classes and additional medals.

Interwar Years

After the war, Werner continued his military service in the Reichswehr. By the outbreak of World War II, he had risen to the rank of colonel and commanded an infantry regiment.

World War II

Werner played a significant role in Poland and France campaigns, earning repeated Iron Cross decorations. In 1940, he received the Knight's Cross. He commanded the 73rd Infantry Division in Crimea and fought in the Caucasus before receiving the Gold German Cross in 1943.

As commanding general of the 52nd Army Corps, he led his troops on the Dnieper. In March 1945, he received the Oak Leaves to his Knight's Cross for his valor.

Later Years

In the final days of the war, Werner commanded the Vienna garrison. Captured by American forces in 1945, he was released in 1947.
