Early Life and Successes

Rudy Galindo was born in Sacramento, California, and began skating at the age of three. He quickly rose through the ranks of figure skating, becoming the 1987 World Junior Champion in men's singles skating. In 1988, he teamed up with Kristi Yamaguchi to win the World Junior Championship in pair skating.

Partnership with Kristi Yamaguchi

Galindo and Yamaguchi became a formidable pair, known for their unusual technique of rotating in opposite directions — Yamaguchi counterclockwise and Galindo clockwise. They won the U.S. National Pair Skating Championships in 1989 and 1990. In 1989, they attempted to perform a parallel triple flip jump, but their efforts were marred by a mistiming and a downgrade. In 1990, Galindo executed the jump while Kristi only managed a single flip, further highlighting their lack of synchronization. The partnership dissolved after these experiments.

Return to Singles Skating

Galindo returned to singles skating and won the 1996 U.S. National Championships at the age of 28, becoming the oldest men's champion in 50 years. He went on to win a bronze medal at the 1996 World Championships with his innovative choreography and complex jump combinations. In the summer of 1996, Galindo retired from amateur competition.

Post-Retirement Life

After retiring, Galindo performed in Tom Collins' "Champions on Ice" tour from 1996 to 2007. He publicly came out as gay in 1996 and published an autobiography, "Icebreaker," in 1997. Galindo was diagnosed with HIV and passed away on June 3, 2019, at the age of 50.
