Norman Collins: The Legendary American Tattooist

Norman Collins, known as Sailor Jerry, was an American tattoo artist who had a profound impact on the development of modern tattooing in the United States.

Early Life and Apprenticeship

Born in Reno, Nevada on January 14, 1911, Collins spent his childhood in Northern California. Under the tutelage of "Big Mike," he learned traditional tattooing techniques using manual needle and ink. In the late 1920s, he studied under Tatts Thomas, who introduced him to the electric tattoo machine, which he would use for the next five decades.

Naval Service

Collins served in the Navy, where he was influenced by the intricacy of Eastern tattoos. After returning from his service, he settled in Honolulu, Hawaii, to pursue his passion for tattooing.

Honolulu Tattoo Studio

In Chinatown, Collins opened his first tattoo parlor. To attract customers, he wore white t-shirts to showcase his extensive tattoos. Unlike other tattooists, Collins enjoyed socializing, playing saxophone in his band, and traveled frequently. He also hosted a radio show as "Old Ironsides."

Sailor Jerry Style

Collins' distinctive tattoo style, known as "Sailor Jerry," became immensely popular. His designs often featured nautical themes, including skulls, anchors, and ships. He also introduced the "heart with dagger" motif and the motto "Death Before Dishonor."

Innovations and Legacy

Collins' tattooing methods departed from prevailing trends. He combined Western themes with Eastern techniques, using looser linework and single-use needles. His advancements in tattoo machinery and needles reduced pain for clients. Today, Sailor Jerry's designs are protected under copyright law, and his work remains a source of inspiration for tattooists worldwide.

Sailor Jerry Ltd.

In collaboration with tattoo artists Ed Hardy and Mike Malone, Collins co-founded Sailor Jerry Ltd. The company produces merchandise featuring his iconic designs, including the popular Sailor Jerry rum.

Legacy

Despite unauthorized copying, Norman Collins' work continues to adorn the bodies of millions worldwide. Beyond the tattoos themselves, his memory lives on through the affectionate image of a jovial sailor with a pipe and a glass of rum, always accompanied by his trademark letter "R" in the corner.
