Samantha Mathis was born on May 12, 1970, in Brooklyn, New York, USA. She comes from an acting family, with her mother, Bibi Besch, being a well-known actress who passed away in 1996 from cancer. Samantha's grandmother, Gusti Huber, was also an actress, appearing in over 20 films. With such a background, it was no surprise that Samantha followed in their footsteps.

Samantha's first role was in a commercial for children's products, alongside her attractive mother. However, she gained fame for her role as Nora Diniro in the classic story of rebellious teenagers, "Pump Up the Volume" in 1990. In this film, her character falls in love with Mark Hunter, played by Christian Slater. Their on-screen romance soon turned into a real-life relationship.

Samantha, along with her former boyfriend Christian Slater, who took over River's role in "Interview with the Vampire" (1994), mourned his loss. Christian donated his salary from the film to the River Phoenix Memorial Fund.
