Early Life and Family Background
Sanford Ballard Dole was born on April 23, 1844, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to white Protestant missionaries from the United States. He belonged to the influential community of wealthy immigrants in the Hawaiian Islands who played a significant role in shaping the local political landscape. His cousin, James Dole, founded the Hawaiian Pineapple Company, later known as Dole Food Company.
Advocate for Westernization and Revolution
As a lawyer and confidant of King Kalākaua and Queen Liliʻuokalani, Sanford Dole advocated for the Westernization of Hawaiian society and culture. In 1887, he participated in a revolution backed by local businessmen that resulted in the adoption of a new constitution known as the "Bayonet Constitution."
The Overthrow of the Monarchy
In 1893, with the involvement of the United States, the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown, and Queen Liliʻuokalani was deposed. A provisional government was formed in the aftermath of the coup, with Dole as its head. When Grover Cleveland became President of the United States, the American government offered to reinstate the queen on condition of amnesty for the revolutionaries, but she refused.
President of the Republic of Hawaii
On July 4, 1894, the provisional government proclaimed the Republic of Hawaii. Dole became its first and only president, serving from 1894 to 1900. His administration weathered several attempts to restore the monarchy, including the Wilcox Rebellion of 1895. Dole also achieved diplomatic success by securing recognition for the Republic of Hawaii from all nations that had previously recognized the kingdom.
Governor of the Territory of Hawaii
In 1900, Hawaii became a territory of the United States, and Dole became its governor. However, he resigned from this position in 1903 to become a circuit judge. He served in this capacity until 1915.
Later Years and Legacy
Sanford Dole passed away on June 9, 1926, at the age of 82. He is remembered as a significant figure in Hawaiian history, having played a leading role in both the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of the Republic and Territory of Hawaii.
