Sania Mirza is an Indian professional tennis player, known as the first Indian woman to break into the top 30 of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings. Early Life

Sania Mirza was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, to Imran Mirza, a sports journalist, and his wife Nasima. She was raised in Hyderabad, in a highly religious environment. Mirza started playing tennis at the age of six and made her professional debut in 2003 under the guidance of her father.

Early Career

Even before her official debut, Mirza had already participated in several tournaments of various levels. In April 2001, she reached the second round of a $10,000 tournament organized by the International Tennis Federation in Chandigarh and the quarterfinals of a tournament in Pune. In September, Mirza reached the semifinals of a similar tournament held in New Delhi.

Professional Career

In 2002, Mirza's career took a positive turn as she won three consecutive tournaments, one in Hyderabad and two in Manila, after a loss in the first round of a championship. In April 2003, she made her professional debut in the Indian Fed Cup team and won all three of her singles matches. Mirza also secured victory in the Girls' Doubles Championships at Wimbledon in the same year, partnering with Russian player Alisa Kleybanova.

In 2005, Mirza reached the third round of the Australian Open, where she was defeated by Serena Williams, who eventually became the champion. In February of the same year, Mirza became the first Indian sportswoman to win a WTA singles tournament by defeating Alona Bondarenko in the Hyderabad Open.

Throughout her career, Mirza had notable victories over top-ranked players such as Svetlana Kuznetsova, Nadia Petrova, and Martina Hingis. While she has not won any more WTA singles titles, Mirza has achieved 12 victories in doubles tournaments. She has also reached the finals of Grand Slam tournaments in both singles and doubles categories.

As of now, Sania Mirza is ranked 64th in the WTA singles rankings, with her career-high ranking of 27th achieved on August 27, 2007. In the doubles category, she is ranked 11th.
