Sanjay Kirloskar was born into a family of entrepreneurs. His grandfather, Shantanurao Laxmanrao Kirloskar, was the founder of the Kirloskar Group, and his father, Chandrakant Kirloskar, was the chairman of Kirloskar Brothers Ltd., a leading division of the group.

Sanjay received his education at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. After completing his studies, he joined the family business.
