Sarah Flower Adams: Life and Legacy
Sarah Flower Adams (née Flower) was an acclaimed English poet and hymnist born on High Street, Old Harlow, Essex. As the youngest daughter of editor Benjamin Flower, her siblings included the renowned composer Eliza Flower.
Literary Endeavors
Adams' literary prowess shone through in her groundbreaking dramatic poem, "Vivia Perpetua." This epic work chronicled the lives of early Christians. Additionally, Adams crafted numerous Christian hymns, including the beloved "Nearer, My God, to Thee" and "He sendeth sun, he sendeth rain."
Religious Beliefs
Adams held Unitarian beliefs, which emphasized the unity of God and emphasized the importance of reason and tolerance.
Marriage and Legacy
In 1834, Adams married William Bridges Adams, a polemist, and engineer. Together, they resided in Loughton, Essex, where a commemorative plaque now stands in their honor. Sadly, Adams passed away from tuberculosis at the young age of 43. She was laid to rest in Harlow on August 21, 1848. Her legacy as a gifted poet and hymnist continues to inspire and uplift generations of readers.
