Biography of Scott Lunny
A Music InnovatorScott Lunny is a pianist, composer, and electronic musician who has always been interested in creating and performing unconventional music. He has developed his own unique symbols for key signatures and time signatures, experimented with altering the piano strings using metallic objects and other special devices, and combined these techniques with traditional piano playing.

Education and Influences
Lunny has studied the intricacies of improvisation and composition with renowned musicians such as Roscoe Mitchell, Wadada Leo Smith, Morton Subotnick, David Rosenboom, and Frederic Rzewski. He obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts. While some individuals in his circle gained significant recognition within niche music communities in the 1960s, they remained relatively unknown in the mainstream music world.
Exploring New Sounds
After moving to New York and residing in the San Francisco Bay Area, Lunny became increasingly interested in expanding the possibilities of piano timbres. He enlisted the services of pianist Denman Maroney as a starting point for his experiments in extracting ultra-realistic sounds from the instrument. Lunny created his own symbols for key signatures and time signatures, used metallic objects and other special devices to manipulate the piano strings, and ventured into experimental techniques while still incorporating traditional piano playing.
A Versatile Collaborator
Lunny has collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including Oliver Lake, Frank Gratkowski, Wolfgang Fuchs, John Raskin, Joel Leandre, Henry Kaiser, Gianni Gebbia, Gino Robair, Joe Morris, and Paul Smoker. He has performed at numerous music festivals on the West Coast, such as the "Olympic Experimental Festival," the "Big Sur Experimental Music Festival," the Los Angeles "Line Space Line Festival," and the "San Francisco Electronic Music Festival."
International Endeavors
In recent years, Lunny has traveled to Israel and Germany with the "abstract music advocate" and saxophonist Ariel Shibolet and bassist Damon Smith. In May 2009, he appeared at the "Ulrichsberger Kaleidophon" concert alongside Tanya Fechtmeir, Damon Smith, and cellist Hugh Livingston. Pianist Weasel Walter praised Lunny's talent, describing him as a "mad pianist, playing on the keys or on the inside of his instrument with the speed of light and an impeccable sense of harmony and rhythm."
