Early Life and Education
Ted Allen was born and raised in Carmel, Indiana, where his mother instilled in him a love for food and culinary arts. He obtained a degree in psychology from Purdue University in 1987 and later became a member of the management team at the Krannert Graduate School. However, he left his job to pursue a career as a literary editor for the "Journal and Courier" newspaper in Lafayette, Indiana. He later earned a Master of Arts in Journalism from the New York University's science and environmental reporting program.
Career
After moving to Chicago, Ted Allen worked as a reporter for the weekly newspaper "Lerner Newspapers." He began his journey in culinary criticism as a member of the "The Famished Four" team alongside his boyfriend, Barry Rice. Allen freelanced for the magazine "Chicago," eventually becoming its editor-in-chief. He frequently wrote about food, wine, and culinary luminaries. In 1997, he joined the magazine "Esquire" as an associate editor, contributing to a series of articles on food, conducting interviews with celebrities, and co-authoring the popular series "Things a Man Should Know," which covered topics such as fashion, business etiquette, sex, and cocktails. Allen's editorial contributions to "Esquire" were invaluable, and he also wrote numerous articles for various other magazines.
Rise to Fame
In 2003, Ted Allen gained prominence when he appeared on the reality show "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" as a wine and food expert. He continues to participate in television shows as a gourmet, often serving as a guest judge on the American show "Iron Chef America" on the Food Network. Allen hosted a six-part documentary series called "Uncorked: Wine Made Simple" on PBS, which premiered on May 7, 2007. Starting from June 13, 2007, he became a regular guest judge on the 3rd and 4th seasons of the reality show "Top Chef" on Bravo, after occasional appearances in the preceding two seasons. His new show, "Food Detectives," debuted on July 29, 2008, on the Food Network.
Awards and Recognition
In 2001, Ted Allen was nominated for the prestigious National Magazine Award for his article on breast cancer in "Esquire" magazine. He also contributed to a series of food articles (again for "Esquire"), which became a finalist for the National Magazine Award in 2003. In 2004, the reality show "Queer Eye" won an Emmy Award for "Outstanding Reality Program" from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and received a nomination in the same category in 2005.
