Early Life and Career
Born in approximately 1496, Sebastiano Venier embarked on a career in law despite lacking a formal degree. He began serving in the administration of the Venetian Republic and rose through the ranks, becoming Procurator in 1570.
Military Achievements
In the same year, Venier was appointed Commander of the Venetian fleet at the outbreak of the war against the Ottoman Empire. He played a prominent role in the pivotal Battle of Lepanto in 1571, where the Holy League dealt a significant defeat to the Turks.
Accession to the Duchy
Upon his return to Venice a celebrated hero, Venier was elected the 86th Doge on June 11, 1577, at the age of 81. His reign was marked by a massive construction project to build a church in gratitude to the Savior on the island of Giudecca.
Legacy and Death
Sebastiano Venier's reign was cut short by his untimely death on March 3, 1578. It is believed that a heart attack, triggered by a fire that severely damaged the Doge's Palace, was the cause of his passing.
Family and Burial
Venier was married to Cecilia Contarini and had two sons and a daughter named Elena. His tomb is located in the left transept of the Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice.
