Early life and Education
Sir Stuart Peach was born in Staffordshire, England, on February 22, 1956. He completed his secondary education at Aldridge in Staffordshire. Peach earned a Bachelor of Arts in geography, economics, and social history from the University of Sheffield in 1977. In 1997, he received a Master of Philosophy from Downing College, Cambridge.
Military Career
Peach was commissioned as a Pilot Officer on September 1, 1974. He became a qualified weapons instructor and earned a Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air in 1990. From 1994 to 1996, Peach commanded No. IX (Bomber) Squadron, responsible for suppressing enemy air defenses.
In 1997, Peach became Director of Defence Studies at the Royal Air Force's Air Warfare Centre. He served as Air Officer Commanding the British Forces in Italy and NATO Air Commander in Kosovo. For his service, he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2001.
Senior Positions
Peach was promoted to Air Marshal in 2003 and served as Director of Intelligence and Information Operations Staff. In 2006, he became Air Chief Marshal and the first Commander of the new Air Command. He was appointed Deputy Chief of the Air Staff in 2013.
In 2016, Peach was announced as the successor to General Nick Houghton as Chief of the Air Staff. He took up the post on July 14, 2016.
NATO Military Committee
On June 29, 2018, Peach succeeded General Petr Pavel as Chairman of the NATO Military Committee. In this role, he provides military advice to the Secretary General and the North Atlantic Council.
Personal Life and Interests
Peach is married to Bridget Ander, and they have two children. He is a keen sportsman, enjoys military history, and is an aficionado of cooking.
Honors and Recognition
Peach has received numerous honors, including a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire in 2016. He holds honorary degrees from Kingston University and the University of Sheffield. He is also an Honorary Fellow of Downing College. Peach's book, "Perspectives on Air Power: Air Power in Its Wider Context," was published in 1988.
