Biography of Viktor Mikhailovich Zhdanov

Born in Shtepino, Ukraine, on February 1, 1914, Viktor Mikhailovich Zhdanov was a renowned scientist who made significant contributions to the fields of virology and epidemiology.

Education and Early Career

Zhdanov graduated from Kharkiv Medical Institute in 1936. He later pursued his studies at the Physics Faculty of Leningrad University, graduating in 1941. From 1936 to 1946, he served as a physician in the border troops of the NKVD.

Director of the Kharkiv Institute

In 1946, Zhdanov became director of the Kharkiv Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology. During his tenure, he obtained his doctorate in 1947 and became a professor in 1949. His scientific work focused on infectious diseases, including hepatitis and influenza.

Director of the Institute of Virology

In 1951, Zhdanov was appointed head of the laboratory at the Institute of Virology in Moscow. From 1961, he served as the institute's director. He founded the journal "Voprosy Virusologii" (Questions of Virology) in 1956 and became its editor-in-chief.

Global Eradication of Smallpox

In 1958, Zhdanov proposed the Global Eradication of Smallpox Program. His foresight and advocacy led to the successful eradication of the disease worldwide by 1980. He received the WHO's Bifurcation Needle Award in 1976 for his contributions.

HIV/AIDS Research

In later years, Zhdanov studied HIV/AIDS, recognizing its global health significance. His team developed diagnostic test systems and initiated research on a genetically engineered vaccine and monoclonal antibodies.

Leadership and Awards

Zhdanov was a member of the Communist Party from 1941 and served as deputy minister of health of the USSR from 1955 to 1960. He was elected academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences in 1960 and president of the International Union of Microbiological Societies from 1970 to 1974.

Legacy

Zhdanov died in Moscow on July 14, 1987. His legacy as a pioneering scientist and advocate for global health continues to inspire generations of researchers. His numerous publications and contributions laid the foundations for modern virology and epidemiology.
