Selim Sarper: Turkish Diplomat and Politician
Early Life and EducationSelim Sarper was born on 14 June 1899, in Istanbul, and spent his formative years in Germany. He graduated from high school in 1918 and subsequently studied law at the University of Berlin. Upon his return to Turkey, he pursued further legal studies at Ankara University.
Diplomatic Career
In 1923, Sarper embarked on his diplomatic career as a French teacher at a school in Adana. He then worked at an independent tribunal before joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a translator in 1927. In 1928, he was appointed vice-consul in Odessa, USSR.
In subsequent years, Sarper served as third secretary at the Turkish embassy in Moscow, second secretary, and in consular positions in Komotini, Greece; Odessa, USSR; and Berlin, Germany. In 1944, he was appointed Turkish ambassador to the USSR, where he engaged in negotiations regarding Soviet territorial claims.
Postwar Roles
From 1946 to 1947, Sarper served as Turkish ambassador to Italy. He subsequently held the post of permanent representative to the United Nations from 1947 to 1957. From 1957 to 1960, he represented Turkey at NATO.
Political Career
After the military coup d'état in 1960, Sarper was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. He held this position until 1962. Subsequently, he joined the Republican People's Party (CHP) and was elected to the Grand National Assembly in 1961. He was re-elected in 1965.
Later Life and Legacy
On 14 May 1968, Sarper underwent a second lung surgery. He passed away in Ankara on 11 October 1968, and his remains were interred in Istanbul. He was survived by his wife and two daughters. Sarper's contributions to Turkish diplomacy and politics continue to be recognized and celebrated.
