Sem Dresden
Early Life and EducationBorn in The Hague, Netherlands, Sem Dresden was a Dutch composer whose father was the writer Sem Dresden Sr. Dresden's musical education began in Amsterdam under Bernard Zweers, and he later studied in Berlin with Engelbert Humperdinck and Hans Pfitzner.
Choir Leadership and Founding of Composers' Society
From 1905-1914, Dresden led choral groups in Laren, Amsterdam, and Tiel. In 1918, he co-founded the Society of Contemporary Dutch Composers, which operated for six years.
Teaching and Conservatory Leadership
In 1919, Dresden became a professor at the Amsterdam Conservatory, and in 1924 he was appointed its director. Notable students during his tenure included Cor Kee, Leo Smit, George Stam, Willem van Otterloo, Fré Focke, and Adriaan Engels. He later served as director of the Hague Conservatory from 1937-1941 and 1945-1949.
Compositions
Dresden's compositions included the opera "François Villon" (1957, orchestration completed by Jan Mul), concertos for violin (two), piano, oboe, flute, and organ with orchestra, as well as chamber works such as the Sonata for Violin and Piano (1905, first performed by Carl Flesch).
Legacy
In 1968, a street in the Rotterdam district of Molenlaankwartier was named Dresdenlaan in his honor. Dresden's musical contributions continue to be celebrated and inspire musicians in the Netherlands and beyond.
