Early Life and Musical RootsBebel Gilberto, born Isbel Gilberto, was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her mother, Miúcha, introduced her to music at a young age, and by the age of seven, she had recorded songs for her mother's debut album, "Miucha." At age nine, she performed alongside Miúcha and saxophonist Stan Getz at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Theater and Songwriting
Gilberto expanded her artistic horizons by venturing into theater, appearing in popular musicals such as "Os Saltimbancos" and "Pirlimpimpim." She also joined an experimental theater group associated with Circo Voador, where she formed a close friendship with singer-songwriter Cazuza. In collaboration with Cazuza and D?, she co-wrote "Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo," which became a national hit and garnered several awards.
Solo Career and International Success
In 1983, Gilberto released her debut EP, which featured the popular songs "Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo" and "Mais Feliz." In 1991, she relocated to New York City, establishing her own band and performing in prestigious venues such as Lincoln Center.
Critical Acclaim and Collaborations
Gilberto's 2000 debut album, "Tanto Tempo," was met with critical acclaim. She continued to collaborate with renowned artists, including Seu Jorge and Marina Lima. Her 2007 album, "Momento," featured production from British producer Guy Sigsworth and collaborations with friends from the New York music scene.
Recent Projects and Voiceover Work
In 2009, Gilberto released her fourth studio album, "All in One." She also lent her voice to the animated film "Rio," portraying the character of Eva, the wife of the toucan Rafael.
